Spot gold moved above $4,200 an ounce for the first time on October 15, 2026. The move was linked to U.S.-China tensions and expectations of U.S. rate cuts, but a record-high headline does not guarantee future returns. The more practical questions are how you will buy, how you will sell and how much disappears even if the gold price goes nowhere.
One metal, four routes
Investing in gold can mean four different contracts. The KRX gold market holds grams of gold in a brokerage account. A gold banking account records a weight of gold at a bank. A gold ETF is a listed fund, while physical gold means bars, coins or jewelry in your possession. Their price exposure may look similar, but their taxes, liquidity and custody are not.
| Route | What you hold | Cost to check | Typical purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| KRX gold market | Gold quantity in a brokerage account | Trading fee; VAT on withdrawal | Direct KRW gold trading |
| Gold banking | Gold weight in a bank account | Buy/sell spread; tax on gains | Small recurring purchases |
| Gold ETF | Shares in a listed fund | Fees, tracking error and account tax | Exchange trading or retirement account |
| Physical gold | Bars, coins or jewelry | VAT, fabrication, retail and buyback spreads | Possession, gifts or adornment |
Wikimedia CommonsThe round-trip cost of KRW 10 million
Assume KRW 10 million is invested and fully withdrawn one year later. For KRX, the calculation applies the exchange's indicative online fee of about 0.3% at both purchase and sale. For gold banking, it uses Woori Bank's disclosed purchase price of 1% above its reference price and sale price of 1% below, then applies 15.4% withholding only to a positive gain. Account charges, broker discounts and local premiums are excluded.
| Assumption | KRX gold market | Woori gold banking |
|---|---|---|
| Gold price unchanged | KRW 9,940,179 | KRW 9,801,980 |
| Gold up 10%, before tax | KRW 10,934,197 | KRW 10,782,178 |
| Gold up 10%, after tax | KRW 10,934,197 | KRW 10,661,723 |
| Rise needed to recover price friction | About 0.60% | About 2.02% |
The KRX formula is 10,000,000 ÷ 1.003 × (1 + return) × 0.997. The gold-banking formula is 10,000,000 ÷ 1.01 × (1 + return) × 0.99, with 15.4% withholding applied only to the positive gain in the after-tax line. Execution prices and the gap between domestic and international prices can change the outcome, so this is a cost gauge, not a return forecast.
Wikimedia CommonsThe boundary between KRX custody and withdrawal
KRX gold orders start at one gram. Regular trading runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., orders are limit orders and the quote unit is KRW 10. Trading inside the market is exempt from VAT, and capital gains are not taxed. The conditions change when the metal leaves the account: withdrawal is in 100-gram or one-kilogram units and brings 10% VAT plus delivery-related charges.
If the plan is to obtain a bar eventually, the low account-trading cost does not carry all the way to physical possession. Costs differ depending on whether the gold remains in the account, is withdrawn later or is purchased as a bar from the outset.
Gold banking's 2% threshold
A gold account is convenient for small purchases in a bank app, but buying occurs 1% above the reference price and selling 1% below. The gold price must rise about 2.02% merely to recover that gap. Positive gains face 15.4% withholding, and the account is not covered by deposit insurance. The word ‘account’ does not make it a principal-protected deposit.
Woori's reference price reflects both the international gold price and the won-dollar exchange rate. Even when gold rises in dollars, a stronger won can reduce the KRW return or turn it negative. That is why an international gold chart alone cannot predict the result in a Korean account.
An ETF's tracking method and account
Gold ETFs trade like stocks and may fit a retirement account, but products with ‘gold’ in their names are not structurally identical. Key points include whether the fund holds spot exposure or follows futures, whether it hedges currency, and what it reports for total expenses and tracking error. Futures products may also be affected by contract-roll costs. Tax treatment varies by product and account, which is why no single ETF number is forced into the KRX and gold-banking table.
The cost of possessing physical gold
Wikimedia CommonsThe clearest upfront cost of physical gold is 10% VAT. Even if every other cost were zero, the metal itself would have to appreciate 10% to offset the VAT paid at purchase. Bar fabrication, jewelry workmanship, retailer margins and the dealer's buyback spread can add more. Because those figures vary by seller, presenting one universal proceeds figure would be misleading.
If the goal is possession, a gift, inheritance planning or adornment, however, those costs are not purely an investment loss. The extra amount paid to hold the metal belongs to the cost of possession. Keeping the investment budget separate from the possession budget reduces disappointment at resale.
Four lines to write before buying
A record high and high search volume signal attention, not an instruction to buy. KRX offers relatively low friction while gold remains in the account, gold banking offers small-purchase convenience, ETFs offer exchange and account flexibility, and physical gold offers possession. Each advantage comes with a cost or constraint at the same point.
Before a decision, the latest fee and tax notices from the chosen broker, bank or ETF prospectus still need review. Concentrating the portfolio in one asset can increase the scale of a loss even when gold is used for diversification. A position sized within a bearable loss range, with its costs and exit route written down, matters more than guessing the exact top.
